DOJ’S KATARUNGAN CARAVAN PROMOTES VOLUNTEERISM, BENEFITS ALMOST 300 INMATES

The Katarungan Caravan, led by the DOJ Action Center and Bureau of Corrections, provided free legal aid to over 270 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the New Bilibid Prison on April 11, 2025.

Volunteer lawyers and law students from various legal organizations offered assistance to elderly and terminally ill PDLs, helping them explore legal remedies and apply for humanitarian release.

Undersecretary Margarita Gutierrez emphasized that the initiative fosters a culture of compassion and civic responsibility within the legal community.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla praised the efforts, highlighting the importance of community involvement in legal advocacy.

The Caravan, which has extended its services to other prisons and underserved communities, has already helped release wrongfully detained individuals and served over 12,000 people in 2024 alone.
