Health Secretary Ted Herbosa revealed a concerning surge in Tuberculosis (TB) cases during a recent regional meeting in Pasay, Philippines.
In 2023, TB cases reached 612,000, equivalent to 549 cases per 100,000 population, a notable increase from the previous year’s 439 cases per 100,000.
Herbosa attributed this rise partly to the crowded living conditions in low-income households, exacerbating transmission rates.
Stressing the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment, he highlighted advancements in portable X-ray technology and upcoming TB vaccines.
Additionally, Dr. Lucia Ditiu of the Stop TB Partnership emphasized the urgency to address TB, noting its airborne nature.
The Department of Health received donations to enhance TB testing capabilities, including mobile vans equipped with portable X-rays.
Intending to achieve a 100 percent diagnosis rate, the Philippines aligns with global efforts to end TB by 2030.
