DOH REPORTS PERTUSSIS CASES PLATEAUING AFTER RECENT SURGE

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa announced on Tuesday that the pertussis outbreak is showing signs of being controlled, with the number of cases plateauing.

Although specific data on cases were not disclosed, Herbosa assured that monitoring is ongoing through the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit.

He emphasized the importance of vaccination against pertussis, particularly for children aged zero to five, urging parents to ensure their children receive Pentavalent vaccines.

Vaccination is deferred only for asymptomatic children. Pertussis, which can be transmitted through coughing or sneezing, presents symptoms similar to influenza, including fever, colds, and coughs. Severe cases may lead to apnea, difficulty breathing, and vomiting.

The Department of Health had earlier ordered 800,000 to 1 million doses of pertussis vaccines, expected to arrive by June.

The Serum Institute of India requires approximately 120 days for vaccine formulation. The latest report from the DOH indicated 568 pertussis cases and 40 deaths from January 1 to March 16, 2024, with a significant increase compared to the same period last year.

Notably, the National Capital Region (NCR) recorded 27% of total cases, while other regions also reported increases.
