The Philippine National Police (PNP) has reported a decrease in the crime rate during the first 21 months of the Marcos administration compared to the same period under former President Rodrigo Duterte.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos highlighted the improved peace and order situation, with a significant reduction in index crime volume and peace and order indicators.
The average monthly crime rate and focus crimes such as theft, physical injury, robbery, rape, murder, carnapping, and homicide also experienced notable declines. Additionally, non-index crime volume decreased, and the PNP achieved high crime clearance and solution efficiency. President Marcos emphasized the success of the “bloodless” anti-illegal drug campaign, citing the confiscation of a significant amount of shabu in Batangas.
Meanwhile, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) welcomed the Department of Justice’s commitment to safeguard human rights and combat extrajudicial killings and other human rights violations in the country, expressing hope for concrete results in resolving cases of human rights violations.
The DOJ’s statement was issued following the release of the 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices of the United States Department of State, which highlighted ongoing human rights concerns in the Philippines.
