CUSTOMS DEFENDS LEGALITY OF SEIZURE OF CO’S VEHICLES

The Bureau of Customs and the Independent Commission for Infrastructure said the seizure of luxury cars linked to former Rep. Elizaldy Co was conducted lawfully and followed proper procedures, rejecting claims that authorities took the vehicle keys.

ICI special adviser Rodolfo Azurin said neither Customs nor ICI confiscated the keys and stressed that the search was limited to vehicles covered by valid warrants.

The BOC earlier seized eight of nine luxury vehicles registered under Co, his wife, and Sunwest Inc. in Bonifacio Global City for alleged import violations and unpaid duties and taxes.

Azurin added that claims about 34 vehicles prompted the ICI to look into additional units not initially included in their search warrants.

BOC Deputy Chief of Staff Chris Noel Bendijo said the entire operation was recorded on body cameras and that copies of the warrants were properly served and acknowledged, proving the implementation was “above board.”
