A Muntinlupa court dropped all remaining criminal charges against former justice secretary Leila de Lima on Monday, concluding years of legal battles for one of the most vocal critics of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s deadly drug war.
De Lima, who had been imprisoned for over six years since her 2017 arrest, emerged from the courtroom declaring, “I am now completely free and vindicated.”
The final case was dismissed due to insufficient evidence, following the earlier dismissal of two other drug charges.
De Lima, who had investigated alleged death squad killings linked to Duterte, maintained that the charges were fabricated to silence her.
The court’s decision has been hailed by various political figures and international observers as a victory for justice and human rights.
