As election violence escalates ahead of the May polls, Comelec Chairman George Garcia urged candidates to treat elections as a peaceful contest and avoid hostility.
Garcia emphasized that candidates should exemplify statesmanship and urged both candidates and their supporters to remain composed.
Election watchdog NAMFREL expressed concern over the rise in violence and called for peaceful campaigning, pledging to monitor flashpoints to prevent further escalation.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported 39 suspected election-related incidents, with 11 confirmed cases, but noted a decrease in areas of concern, attributing it to swift security measures.
Meanwhile, the PNP is on heightened alert, with 75% of its force deployed to ensure security during the election period and upcoming public events, while the Comelec set April 15 as the deadline for observer accreditation.
