Beginning today, June 15, the China Coast Guard (CCG) will start detaining foreigners who intrude into the waters of the West Philippine Sea, escalating tensions in the disputed area.
The directive, issued in May, allows for detentions of up to 30 days for individuals perceived as threats to national security or engaging in illegal activities.
This follows a recent incident where Philippine civilian boats brought supplies to Filipino fishermen at Bajo de Masinloc, a contested shoal.
The Philippine Navy, in coordination with other agencies, plans to prevent the detention of Filipino citizens.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has condemned the policy as “unacceptable,” while US and local experts urge the Philippines to resolve the issue through diplomacy.
