CHINA SIGNALS WILLINGNESS TO RESUME SOUTH CHINA SEA OIL TALKS, URGES PH TO DEMONSTRATE SINCERITY

China said it is open to resuming joint oil and gas talks in the South China Sea but told the Philippines it must first “demonstrate sincerity” before negotiations can restart.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. cited the global energy crisis caused by the war in Iran as a possible impetus to revive the talks, which collapsed four years ago over sovereignty issues.

The Chinese Embassy emphasized that joint development could uphold regional peace and bring benefits to both countries.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro noted that Marcos has not yet formally directed the restart of negotiations, and any future talks would consider constitutional restrictions and past pitfalls.

The Philippines is particularly affected by the Middle East conflict, as it imports most of its crude oil from the region, highlighting the urgency of exploring new energy partnerships.
