Carlos Yulo ended the Philippines’ four-day wait for a gold medal at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya after ruling the men’s floor exercise with a score of 14.666 on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Nagoya General Gymnasium.
Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi placed second with 14.600, while Japan’s Shoma Tsukiyama took bronze with 14.566, and Yulo’s younger brother Karl finished seventh.
Yulo, who previously won two gold medals at the Paris Olympics, will next compete in the vault and parallel bars finals on Friday.
Meanwhile, Kayla Sanchez finished fourth in the women’s 50m freestyle despite setting a new Philippine record of 24.75 seconds, while Joanie Delgaco placed sixth in women’s singles sculls and skateboarders Mazel Paris Alegado and Jericho Francisco advanced to their respective finals.
The Philippines also secured quarterfinal berths in squash through Jemyca Aribado and David Pelino, while its fencing, Naraka: Bladepoint esports, and beach volleyball campaigns suffered setbacks.
