The Philippines’ Information and Communications Technology Secretary, Ivan John Uy, has issued a stark warning: the era of AI is upon us, and its impact will be akin to the invention of fire or the wheel.
Companies unprepared for the shift risk “disappearing” like Kodak or Nokia, while new industries and billionaires will rise from the ashes.
But AI isn’t just a job-killer; it’s a tool for empowerment. By embracing AI, businesses can streamline operations and free human workers for more creative roles. The key, Uy emphasizes, is training workers to leverage AI, not fear it.
While acknowledging that technology is a double-edged sword, Uy believes that AI has the potential for greater good by empowering and simplifying complex tasks. However, he also warned that if misdirected, AI can be used to cause harm, necessitating proper guidance and regulation.
Additionally, Uy disclosed that his agency is working towards establishing a team of cybersecurity experts to monitor cyber activity—an essential aspect of AI implementation.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) plans to continue implementing connectivity projects and enhancing the E-Gov website, further advancing technological initiatives in the Philippines.
