Nearly two years after the MT Princess Empress oil spill, around 30,000 fisherfolk in Oriental Mindoro are receiving compensation from the International Oil Pollution Compensation (IOPC) fund, with some receiving up to ₱700,000, according to Governor Humerlito Dolor. About 300 individuals from the tourism sector have also started receiving payouts, with 1,000 to 1,200 more expected to benefit. In total, 35,000 to 40,000 people will be compensated. The provincial government is claiming at least ₱41 million for oil spill response expenses. Compensation claims remain open until March 1, 2026.
