Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co tendered his irrevocable resignation from the House of Representatives instead of returning to face graft allegations over alleged flood control anomalies.
Co cited threats to his family’s safety and denial of due process but vowed to contest the “baseless” charges filed by Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco.
Speaker Faustino Dy III accepted the resignation, saying it spared Co from an ethics probe, though Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stressed that Co remains accountable and is now subject to an Interpol blue notice request.
Rep. Alfredo Garbin Jr. will take over Co’s seat, while the Independent Commission for Infrastructure has endorsed graft and malversation charges to the Ombudsman.
Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte accused former Speaker Martin Romualdez of long-standing involvement in corruption and illegal gambling, charges Romualdez strongly denied.
