The United States and China announced on Monday a “framework” deal to resolve their dispute over TikTok, which would see the Chinese-owned app transferred to US-controlled ownership.
US President Donald Trump confirmed the agreement in a social media post, saying young Americans “very much wanted to save” the app, while adding he will speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday to finalize details.
Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Li Chenggang said the deal aimed to reduce investment barriers and strengthen economic cooperation, though Beijing vowed to defend its national interests.
The agreement follows talks in Madrid between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, tackling broader trade tensions.
Despite the breakthrough, experts warned national security concerns remain unresolved, particularly over TikTok’s data and algorithms.
