The University of the Philippines (UP) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have partnered to improve flood management in Metro Manila through research and science-based planning.
The two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding on Oct. 21 to support flood mitigation, knowledge-sharing, and technical assistance.
The partnership supports the government’s Oplan Kontra Baha initiative, which includes plans to build 39 detention basins under the Metro Manila Sponge City Project.
The MMDA is also exploring the expansion of a flood monitoring system to help authorities assess rainfall and identify flood-prone areas.
Both institutions said scientific data and research would help guide flood prevention efforts and strengthen community resilience.
