The forthcoming trilateral summit involving the US, Japan, and the Philippines in Washington aims to bolster the Philippines’ defense modernization efforts, according to the Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez.
The summit, a first for the three nations, signifies a strategic collaboration to enhance not only the armed forces but also the navy and coast guard of the Philippines.
This initiative is particularly crucial amidst escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has established the National Maritime Council to address maritime challenges and facilitate aid acquisition for maritime security.
While China has expressed opposition to such collaborations, Romualdez emphasized that the summit is within ordinary diplomatic bounds. The White House underscored the talks’ goal of promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Despite a previous international court ruling against China’s claims in the South China Sea, Beijing remains adamant, prompting the Philippines to pursue a multilateral dialogue while upholding territorial sovereignty.
However, activist groups caution against being entangled in the US-China rivalry while condemning Chinese aggression in the West Philippine Sea.
