Team Philippines emerged as the overall champion in the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) finals in Shenzhen, China, from January 3 to 6, securing 10 gold, 10 silver, and 20 bronze medals.
Leading the charge were Jenylle Nyka Lee, Carsten Edmund Ang, Allen Iver Barroga, and Ma. Cassandra Reich Duque, with Barroga and Duque representing Sarrat National High School in Ilocos Norte.
Duque, a standout in the senior secondary category, also made history as the first Filipino student to receive a full scholarship from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.
The victory highlights the country’s commitment to excellence in mathematics education, with 67 Filipino representatives taking part.
MOTLI praised the achievement, noting it as a symbol of the Philippines’ dedication to fostering mathematical talent.
