TARRIELA FLAGS CHINA’S INTEREST IN 2028 POLL OUTCOME

The outcome of the 2028 national elections is a concern for China, as it could shape Philippine policy in the West Philippine Sea, according to Philippine Coast Guard spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela.

He warned that continued transparency about Chinese aggression in the area could disadvantage Beijing, and criticized efforts to frame WPS issues as a solely diplomatic matter under the DFA.
Only Vice President Sara Duterte has publicly expressed her intention to run for president in 2028, prompting calls to assess candidates’ positions on WPS.

Meanwhile, the Senate plans a dialogue with the Chinese embassy, coordinated with the DFA, to address recent tensions and social media attacks.

The DFA reaffirmed the Philippines’ sovereign rights over its maritime territories and expressed support for principled, constructive engagement with China while maintaining alliances with like-minded countries.
