According to a recent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS), nearly half of Filipino families perceive themselves as poor.
The poll, conducted from March 21 to 25, revealed that 46 percent of Filipino families rated themselves as “mahirap” or poor, equivalent to approximately 13 million families.
This percentage remained relatively unchanged compared to December 2023. The highest self-rated poverty was recorded in the Visayas at 64 percent, followed by Mindanao at 56 percent, Luzon areas outside the capital region at 38 percent, and Metro Manila at 33 percent.
Additionally, 30 percent of families considered themselves borderline poor, while 23 percent did not consider themselves poor.
Thirty-three percent of families also identified as “food-poor,” with notable increases observed in Visayas and Metro Manila.
The survey utilized face-to-face interviews with 1,500 adults and had a sampling error margin of ±2.5 percent for national percentages.
