SUNTAY’S STATEMENTS STRUCK IN HOUSE OVER INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT

A senior opposition lawmaker, Jesus Manuel Suntay, was censured by the House Committee on Justice after making remarks comparing Vice President Sara Duterte calling herself a “designated survivor” to his personal attraction to actress Anne Curtis.

Committee members voted 13-2, with two abstentions, to strike Suntay’s statements from the record, citing concerns about propriety and respect for women.

Suntay argued his comments were imaginary and neither illegal nor immoral, warning against setting a precedent of censoring personal expressions.

Committee Vice Chair Ysabel Maria Zamora said the deletion aligns with efforts to promote women’s empowerment during Women’s Month.

The censure drew support from lawmakers emphasizing the importance of maintaining decorum and avoiding statements that undermine structural support for women in government.
