The wireless unit of PLDT Inc. has completed successful tests of its direct-to-device satellite service in coastal towns of Ilocos Norte facing the West Philippine Sea, moving closer to a planned 2027 commercial rollout.
Smart Communications conducted trials in Burgos, Bangui, and Pagudpud in partnership with Lynk Global Inc., enabling text exchanges between Ilocos Norte and Metro Manila and limited web access, including the website of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration.
Company officials said the technology could boost disaster response, maritime connectivity, and public safety in remote areas, though regulators noted refinements are still needed before full activation.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy reported the presence of 62 Chinese warships and coast guard vessels across key features in the West Philippine Sea, including Panatag, Ayungin, Escoda, and Pag-asa.
The Navy reiterated concerns over the continued foreign presence in areas under Philippine sovereignty and jurisdiction.
