Senate media practitioners have condemned Sen. Rodante Marcoleta for accusing mainstream journalists of being “bayaran” or paid hacks during Senate blue ribbon committee proceedings.
In a statement, they called his remarks a “reckless attack” on journalism and warned that it undermines public trust in the press.
They stressed that while media criticism is valid, it must be based on evidence and not sweeping accusations that vilify an entire profession.
The group said the press remains independent and serves the public interest by reporting facts and holding those in power accountable.
They also warned that efforts to portray journalists as partisan are dangerous, especially amid rising disinformation and political polarization.
