RETIRED OFFICERS PUSHED COUP AGAINST MARCOS, MILITARY REMAINED LOYAL — BRAWNER

Philippine military chief General Romeo Brawner revealed that retired officers urged the armed forces to overthrow President Ferdinand Marcos during recent anti-corruption protests in Manila.

These retired officers tried to recruit younger officers and commanders to support a coup or military intervention, but their calls were firmly rejected.

Brawner met with a group led by ex-general Romeo Poquiz, who criticized the government but did not specify an alternative leader.

The military chief emphasized that the armed forces remain loyal to the constitution and informed President Marcos about the attempted recruitment.

Despite the military’s past role in toppling Marcos Sr. in 1986, the current leadership stands firm against any moves to undermine democracy.
