A bipartisan group of U.S. senators filed a resolution recognizing the 74th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) with the Philippines and condemning China’s aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea.
Senate Resolution 409 criticizes Beijing for harassment of Philippine vessels, including recent incidents at Sandy Cay and Scarborough Shoal.
The measure calls on the U.S. government to counter Chinese escalation and strengthen defense cooperation with the Philippines and other regional allies.
It also reaffirms that the MDT covers attacks on Philippine forces anywhere in the South China Sea.
The resolution highlights ongoing U.S.-Philippines security ties, including joint military exercises and defense modernization efforts.
