Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla vowed to file criminal charges against rioters who disrupted Sunday’s massive anti-corruption rallies, which gathered up to 100,000 peaceful demonstrators nationwide.
Authorities said 216 people, including minors, were arrested in Manila after violent clashes that left nearly 100 police officers injured and vehicles torched, while the Palace condemned the violence and ordered accountability.
Remulla warned that those who threw Molotov cocktails could face frustrated homicide charges, and investigators are exploring possible terrorism charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology also reported cyberattacks on 19 government websites during the unrest, which officials linked to online-organized groups.
Despite the violence, the government reiterated its support for peaceful protests, while rights groups criticized police for alleged arbitrary arrests and excessive force.
