Quezon City, along with five other cities, was named a 2025 Local Leaders Climate Awardee at the Bloomberg Philanthropies COP30 Local Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Mayor Joy Belmonte highlighted the city’s Trash to Cashback program, which incentivizes residents to trade recyclables and single-use plastics for points redeemable for basic commodities or utility bills.
Since its launch in 2021, the program has diverted over 719,000 kg of waste from landfills and waterways, supporting marginalized communities.
Belmonte said the award recognizes Quezon City’s efforts toward a circular economy and strengthens its commitment to inclusive and sustainable climate solutions.
The Bloomberg Philanthropies awards celebrate innovative climate projects that deliver measurable impact and provide a platform to share best practices worldwide.
