President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos attended Pope Francis’ funeral in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, on Saturday, joining world leaders and the Catholic faithful in paying their final respects.
The funeral, which began at 4 p.m. (PH time), was attended by approximately 170 world leaders and 200,000 people.
In an interview, the First Lady shared her memories of Pope Francis, describing him as humble and kind.
Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88, will be buried in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, becoming the first pope in over a century to be laid to rest outside the Vatican.
President Marcos had declared a period of national mourning in the Philippines, with flags flown at half-staff until the pontiff’s burial, honoring his impact on the country, particularly his visit in 2015.
