Sen. Francis Pangilinan challenged the Department of Justice (DOJ) and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to pursue wealthy individuals allegedly involved in agricultural smuggling.
He raised concerns after around 90 of more than 100 smuggling cases were dismissed due to incomplete documents from the Bureau of Customs.
Pangilinan also questioned the lower valuation of some confiscated shipments, which could affect the charges filed.
The DOJ and NBI said they would strengthen coordination with the BOC and pursue cases in accordance with the law.
The Senate finance committee approved the DOJ’s proposed P46.435-billion 2027 budget for plenary consideration.
