The Philippines’ fertility rate has fallen to a historic low of 1.7 children per woman, prompting the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) to call for wider access to family planning and contraception.
The CPD said contraceptive use has increased, but access remains unequal, with unmet need at 12.5% among married women and 48% among sexually active unmarried women.
Barriers include misinformation, stigma, limited contraceptive supplies, and a lack of trained health providers.
The agency also urged stronger reproductive health programs for poor, marginalized, and young Filipinos.
The CPD said improving access to family planning will help people make informed reproductive choices and improve their well-being.
