Malacañang defended the Department of Trade and Industry’s claim that ₱500 is enough for a basic Noche Buena meal for a family of four, saying the discussion focused on feasibility rather than lavish celebration.
Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro emphasized that DTI coordinated with manufacturers to prevent price hikes until the end of December.
The statement drew criticism from Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos, who called the budget unrealistic and said it undermines the sacred and celebratory spirit of Noche Buena.
The bishop urged the government to address deeper issues like corruption, hoarding, and rising commodity prices rather than prescribing “budget meals.”
He added that, regardless of spending, the true meaning of Christmas lies in family, faith, and the presence of Christ.
