PAALAM SECURES QUARTERFINAL SPOT WITH VICTORY OVER ARMENIAN BOXER

Carlo Paalam moved closer to securing a spot in the Paris Olympics with a split decision win over Armenia’s Artur Bazeyan, advancing to the men’s 57kg quarterfinals at the 2nd World Boxing Qualification in Bangkok.

Paalam, a Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, now awaits the winner between Lee Cheng-Wei of Chinese Taipei and Jose De Lo Santos of the Dominican Republic.

He must reach the finals to guarantee his place in Paris, or he will face a box-off if he loses in the semifinals.

Paalam previously defeated Alexei Lagkazasvili of Greece and Shukur Ovenov of Turkmenistan in earlier rounds.

Fellow Filipino boxer Hergie Bacyadan will fight Hungarian Veronika Nakota in the Last 16, needing a semifinal berth to secure her Olympic spot.
