P1.4-BILLION DSWD BUDGET ALLOCATED FOR EL NIÑO MITIGATION PROJECTS

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has announced that it has allocated over P1.4 billion to fund projects aimed at countering the effects of the El Niño phenomenon.

The agency has prepared initiatives such as the Local Adaptation to Water Access (Project LAWA) and Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished (Project BINHI) to address issues of hunger, poverty, and economic vulnerability that may arise due to the anticipated hotter climate conditions.

The projects aim to provide water availability in communities and ensure food security.

Beneficiaries, including farmers, fishermen, indigenous people, and other climate- and disaster-vulnerable groups, will have the opportunity to participate in cash-for-training and work programs.

These programs will involve activities such as the construction and repair of water reservoirs, harvesting facilities, and gardening.

The initiatives will be implemented in 249 cities and municipalities across the country. The DSWD remains committed to its mandate of poverty alleviation and hunger mitigation, focusing on food security through these projects.
