Candidates running for both local and national positions are required to pause all campaigning during Holy Thursday (April 17) and Good Friday (April 18), in observance of the most solemn days of the Catholic Holy Week.
Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Erwin Garcia reminded that campaigning during these days is prohibited under Resolution 10999 and is considered an election offense.
Violations may lead to disqualification and imprisonment under the Omnibus Election Code and the Fair Elections Act.
While acts of devotion like attending mass or joining processions are allowed, any form of political promotion during such activities will be penalized.
Garcia emphasized that genuine religious observance is distinguishable from covert campaigning efforts.
