Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri resigned as Senate president two days before Congress’s sine-die adjournment, amid moves by 14 colleagues to oust him.
Sen. Francis Escudero replaced Zubiri, pledging no “color coding” in the Senate and emphasizing unity. Zubiri, stepping down with pride, vowed to serve independently, while Escudero’s wife, Heart Evangelista, joined him for his oath-taking.
Following Zubiri’s resignation, Jinggoy Estrada was elected Senate president pro-tempore, and Francis Tolentino was named Senate majority leader.
The resignation also signals the end of the controversial Charter change initiative, with Escudero and other senators opposing the measure.
