Meralco, the utility distributor in the Philippines, has announced a minimal increase in power rates for the month of January. The adjustment is due to higher electricity prices in the spot market. Customers can expect an upward adjustment of P0.08 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in their electricity rates this month.
For residential customers, this means a potential increase of around P17 for those consuming 200 kWh, P25 for those consuming 300 kWh, P34 for those consuming 400 kWh, and P42 for those consuming 500 kWh per month.
It is worth noting that in December, Meralco actually decreased power prices by nearly P0.80 per kWh, following a decrease in prices in the spot market.
The increase in power rates for January is primarily attributed to higher generation charges and the completion of a distribution-related refund. The generation charge has gone up by P0.3316 to P7.1291 per kWh from the previous month.
Meralco advises customers to manage their electricity consumption effectively in light of the rate adjustment.
