President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. congratulated Filipino tennis star Alex Eala for her historic Wimbledon campaign, calling her an inspiration to young Filipinos.
Speaking at the end of his official visit to Canada, Marcos praised Eala after she became the first Filipina to reach the third round of Wimbledon’s singles main draw.
The President described Wimbledon as the highest level of tennis competition and said Eala has already proven herself to be a world-class athlete.
Marcos also recalled predicting years ago that the 20-year-old tennis standout was only beginning her rise in international tennis.
Eala’s breakthrough year also included a semifinal appearance at the Miami Open, where she defeated several higher-ranked and Grand Slam-winning opponents to achieve a career-high world ranking.
