Duterte’s lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman, accused President Marcos of using the ICC process as a political tool against Duterte during a media interview in The Hague.
Kaufman claimed that Marcos orchestrated the ICC case to undermine Duterte’s political influence but said the effort failed, as evidenced by Duterte’s landslide win as Davao City mayor in the recent midterm elections.
He described the election results as a protest vote against those pushing the ICC case.
Despite fighting for Duterte’s release, Kaufman urged supporters to respect the ICC process, including the judges and victims.
Duterte was arrested and transferred to the ICC in March for crimes against humanity, with a confirmation of charges hearing scheduled for September 23.
