Manila will pay jeepney drivers around ₱3,000 daily so passengers on participating routes can ride for free, Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso announced Friday.
The program, covering over 1,400 units and potentially serving 100,000 commuters daily, was developed within 48 hours in consultation with jeepney operators and drivers’ associations.
Drivers currently earn as little as ₱200 to ₱500 a day due to soaring fuel prices caused by the Middle East conflict, prompting the city’s stopgap measure.
The free rides will run for five days over two weeks, with possible extensions depending on funds.
The announcement coincides with a nationwide transport strike demanding government action on fuel costs, despite President Marcos Jr. declaring a state of national energy emergency earlier this week.
