Senator Loren Legarda praised the signing of Republic Act No. 12181, or the Adjusted DFA Retirement Benefits Act, which she authored and co-sponsored, to enhance retirement benefits for Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) personnel.
The law provides retirees with a Monthly Pension Differential (MPD) to bridge the gap between their actual GSIS pension and the adjusted DFA pension, with a 50% adjustment factor.
It also grants a monthly gratuity benefit to those retired under RA No. 1616, exempts all benefits from taxes and garnishment, and extends survivorship benefits to qualified dependents.
Legarda emphasized that the law not only honors the service of foreign service officers but also strengthens the country’s diplomatic foundations by ensuring a dignified retirement for retirees.
She believes that the measure will improve career development, reinforce institutional continuity, and inspire more Filipinos to pursue diplomacy as a career.
