Duterte Youth Party-list Rep. Drixie Mae Cardema has introduced House Bill 10910, proposing the reinstatement of the death penalty for heinous crimes such as plunder, rape, and murder, as well as corruption.
The bill suggests using firing squads for government officials and lethal injections for other criminals convicted of these offenses.
Cardema argues that capital punishment is necessary to restore discipline and ensure public safety, reflecting the desires of many Filipinos.
She emphasized that severe criminals continue to instill fear even when imprisoned, thus warranting the return of the death penalty.
Capital punishment was abolished in 2006 by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and currently, the maximum penalty for such crimes is “reclusion perpetua,” or 40 years in prison.
