Under challenging rainy conditions, wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan secured a spot in the men’s 400-meter T52 final at the 17th Paralympic Games on Friday.
Despite finishing fourth in his heat with a time of 1:05.79, Mangliwan advanced to the gold-medal race scheduled for early Saturday morning.
The heat was dominated by world champion Maxime Carabin of Belgium, who clocked 54.48 seconds, while Japan’s Tomoki Sato and Tomoya Ito also qualified with times of 58.04 and 1:00.42, respectively.
Philippine Paralympic Committee president Michael Barredo expressed hope for Mangliwan to improve his time and aim for a medal.
Mangliwan, who learned from his previous disqualification in Tokyo, is guided by coach Bernard Buen and is optimistic about his chances of securing a medal this time.
