Filipino teenage chess sensation Ivan Travis Cu is on the path to becoming a Grandmaster after a strong second-place finish at the Hanoi IM chess tournament in Vietnam.
The 10th-grader from Xavier School scored six points, just half a point behind the winner, Indonesia’s IM Farid Firman Syah.
Cu missed the top spot after losing to Indian FM Chouhan Vrashank in the final round but still achieved his goal by earning 44.4 FIDE rating points, pushing his rating past the 2300 mark to become a FIDE Master.
Among his victories were matches against the tournament champion and several International Masters and FIDE Masters. Cu’s impressive performance highlights his potential in the chess world.
