Malacañang attributed the rise in the Philippines’ hunger rate in September to consecutive natural disasters affecting the country.
Palace press officer Claire Castro cited the Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, which reported that hunger climbed to 22.9 percent in September from 17.6 percent in June.
She noted that the string of calamities has disrupted government efforts, particularly those of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, to reduce hunger.
The SWS survey highlighted that the increase was most pronounced in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.
Despite the surge, the Palace emphasized that the government continues working to provide assistance, while surveys help validate and compare hunger data for better response.
