Australia has launched its largest-ever joint military exercise, Talisman Sabre, involving over 35,000 troops from 19 nations, with activities held for the first time in neighboring Papua New Guinea.
The drills, which began in 2005 as a U.S.-Australia initiative, are expected to draw surveillance from Chinese spy ships, as seen in past years.
Australian Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy confirmed that while China has not yet shadowed the current exercise, preparations are in place to monitor and respond accordingly.
The drills coincide with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s visit to China but are not expected to affect diplomatic discussions with President Xi Jinping.
Albanese emphasized Australia’s commitment to national interest despite the geopolitical backdrop.
