Senator Sherwin Gatchalian urged the national government and local government units (LGUs) to share the costs of building classrooms to address the country’s chronic shortage.
He called for a multi-faceted approach, including a counterpart program and strengthening public-private partnerships to ease overcrowding in public schools.
Gatchalian emphasized the need for safe and orderly classrooms to ensure quality education for learners.
The Department of Education previously reported a backlog of 165,000 classrooms, with construction at the current pace taking about 30 years to complete.
Regions with the highest classroom shortages include Calabarzon, the National Capital Region, Bangsamoro, Central Luzon, and Central Visayas.
