The Gabriela Women’s Party called for urgent economic relief as hunger rates among Filipinos, especially women and children in low-income households, continue to rise.
Rep. Arlene Brosas cited the latest Social Weather Stations survey, which revealed that 27.2 percent of Filipino families, or around 7.5 million individuals, experienced involuntary hunger in March.
Brosas highlighted that women bear the greatest burden, often facing the challenge of feeding their families amid rising food prices and stagnant wages.
She also emphasized the connection between hunger and child malnutrition, stressing the long-term consequences for the nation’s health and productivity.
The party urged the government to take immediate action, including removing the VAT on essential food items and raising the national minimum wage to P1,200 to alleviate the suffering of Filipino families.
