Labor groups called on the government to address poverty and poor working conditions for Filipino workers as the country marked its 126th Independence Day anniversary.
The Nagkaisa Labor Coalition emphasized the need to tackle poverty wages and contractualization under the Marcos administration.
They highlighted that regional wage boards often set wages below the poverty threshold, advocating for living wages to alleviate workers from poverty.
Nagkaisa chair Sonny Matula urged for a nationwide daily wage hike and emphasized the workers’ right to organize unions for job security.
Meanwhile, protests against US intervention and the government’s policies took place in Manila, with groups marching to the US embassy and Mendiola Bridge.
