Maxine Esteban, the Filipina fencer now representing Ivory Coast, is determined to continue her international career despite minor physical setbacks.
The 24-year-old, who previously competed for Ateneo in the UAAP, is currently in Lima, Peru, for the FIE Fencing Grand Prix.
Esteban, who recently recovered from back pain and knee injury, dropped in the women’s foil world rankings from No. 27 to No. 33 but remains focused on regaining her former position and aiming for the Top 20.
Her mother, Carol, shared that Maxine has no plans to retire and is committed to improving further, with upcoming preparations for the African Championships in June and the World Championships in July.
Esteban has a successful track record, including multiple Southeast Asian Games medals and a gold at the 2023 European Circuit in Halle, Germany.
