Former President Rodrigo Duterte’s legal team is working on a plea for his interim release from the International Criminal Court (ICC) but has not yet decided when to file it.
His lead counsel, Nicholas Kaufman, argued that Duterte has the right to release, as there is no risk of flight, witness interference, or continued crimes.
Vice President Sara Duterte earlier mentioned they were considering filing before the next ICC hearing in September.
Kaufman also urged both supporters and critics to allow the judicial process in The Hague to proceed without interference.
Duterte remains detained at the Scheveningen penitentiary as his crimes against humanity case over the drug war continues.
