The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has launched an investigation to determine if safeguard measures are needed to protect the domestic ceramic tile industry from rising imports.
The probe, covering 2020 to the first quarter of 2025, follows a petition by the Ceramic Manufacturers’ Association Inc. (CMAI), which claimed that increased imports have caused serious harm to local producers.
DTI’s preliminary findings show the domestic industry’s market share fell from 30% in 2020 to 14% in early 2025, while imports, led by China, surged to 86%.
Under World Trade Organization rules and the Safeguard Measures Act, the government may impose import restrictions or duties if serious injury is confirmed.
The DTI will also assess potential economic or political impacts and the risk of product shortages before deciding on any safeguard measures.
